| Sandra's philosophy is straight forward, no gimmicks, no nonsense. Just common sense dog training. She believes competitive obedience training is nothing more than constant problem solving. The handler must learn to be consistent and insistent. Creativity is a must to keep the dog focused and attentive. You must predict to prevent, and constantly work for attitude and demand work ethic. Sandra teaches dogs maneuverability and flexibility which she feels is a missing link in dog training. This maneuverability gives the handler and the dog a better understanding of how to connect the four body parts, feet, hips, shoulders and head for better control on fronts, finishes, heeling, drops, etc. She balances out her training, by first, teaching the parts and pieces of every exercise. She will only correct the dog when it fully understands the exercise but fails to comply. This establishes work ethic and reliability on the part of the dog. She also believes in teaching the dog to stay connected mentally, keeping the lines of communication going and not letting the dog make it's own decisions. If the dog starts to make choices, she believes that this can be disaster waiting to happen in competitive obedience training. As far as competing in the show ring, Sandra feels you compete with yourself first. The show ring gives you a game plan as far as what you need to work on in your next training sessions. About setting goals, she feels you have to see what each individual dog can achieve but more importantly what they can teach you. As far as the winning, that is "just frosting on the cake!" |
